Good book! My professor would use the socratic method by randomly calling on people in the class to act as counsel for either the prosecution or the defense. We'd have to have done the reading prior not knowing if we'd be on either side or lucky enough to just sit and watch for that class while adding in voluntary comments. This book lays out the material very well and focuses on the statutory interpretation and application of criminal law. It's a much more 'practical' application of criminal law concepts. However, don't think you'll be 'practice ready' by going through this book. No book or course in law school (absent externships that get you in a real courtroom with real cases) will prepare you for how criminal law actually works. However, this book is an excellent tool to use in class to get one's mind to begin to understand the concept of modern criminal law.The United States does not follow a purely common law approach in its justice system. It has a mixture of both common law (case law) and civil law (codified law) systems. The vast majority of criminal law in the United States today is statutorily based. This book will do students good in that it will begin to open their eyes to how statutes are interpreted and how courts actually apply the statutes to real life cases. You'll likely find a very interesting array of cases that will keep you reading just because they're so interesting! If your professor does like mine did and has students be prosecution and defense counsel for the key case for that class, you'll likely have a great time!
